After a bleak winter break alternately spent between the snowy mountaintops of the Drakensberg and a self-imposed exile upon his return to Amanzimtoti, Wayne du Preez finds himself commencing his third term at Toti High with something akin to dread as the tangled web of secrets and lies he’s been spinning since the start of matric steadily begin to unravel. With Kyle still circling him, and Jessica demanding answers, it’s finally left to Travis to offer his best friend an ultimatum that will set the course for the rest of the school year, and indeed, the rest of their lives “You tell her. Everything. You tell her now, or I will.”

Amanzimtoti Inyoni Rocks Volume 2 CarmenShea Hepburn Books

I received an advanced review copy of this book. This is a touching story - very heart-wrenching to see the abuse and mistreatment that Wayne received from his own father and brother, even being disowned by them. It took a long time, but finally Wayne realized his heart belonged to Kyle, his childhood friend. This is a great book and I would recommend it to others. JN

Amanzimtoti Inyoni Rocks Volume 2 CarmenShea Hepburn Books Reviews

"He'd been drowning so long now Wayne wasn't sure he could be trusted to save anyone, let alone himself. "

Book 2 picks up right where book 1 left off, in the aftermath of an unconscious decision buried deep within Wayne's being. It was heartbreaking to watch as Wayne struggled even in the face of those who so deeply love him. It was just as heartbreaking to see those who love him struggle with not knowing what to do to help Wayne either.

"I can't trust you, Kyle," Wayne whispered, driving his point home, shoving the words out past the lump choking his throat. "I can't trust me."

Inyoni Rocks deals with so many controversial issues within its open to ending that readers need to be prepared as this book will rip at every heartstring in your body.

"And then he thought about how easy it would be to just...give in...with no one there to save him. With no one there to stop him. And for one terrifying moment, he considered it. Considered taking one breath. Because that's all it would take. Just one breath. One last breath. And then it would all be over. All the pain and the anguish and the uncertainty. Nothing would matter anymore... "

Inyoni Rocks was amazingly executed. Yet I need there to be more. After everything Wayne and Kyle have been through, I need something more for them. God knows they deserve it after everything they have been put through.
This book is so heartbreaking. The social issues it tackles are extremely intense and it is done really well. No one should have to go through things that Wayne went through. No one should have to feel that alone and alienated from their own family. As hard as this book was to read I think that it's also a really important book because it shows some very realistic though horrible outcomes of what can happen to people who are different in unaccepting families and societies.
I"m glad that the book wasn't wrapped up in a nice little bow at the end. It was on a positive note but everything was definitely not resolved and I think that was a more realistic way to go. I hope that there is a 3rd book in this series so we can see how Wayne grows as a person now that he has left his hometown and has some room to breathe. I enjoyed the first two books much more than i had anticipated. They're very well written and as I said the issues addressed are complicated.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
This book was very heavy- it was emotional in an overwhelming manner(and I don't mean that in a negative way). There was drama around every corner and- even if sometimes it felt like it was a tiny bit too much drama- it kept the story moving at an exciting pace. There was really not one dull moment. Small bit of criticism on this topic, though at times, the way some situations unfolded seemed a bit redundant, a bit repetitive, and like the drama was almost excessive- but I still keep it as a small criticism because, even when sometimes it resonated in a weird way with me, I do understand that each situaiton served a purpose within the story (I just think it would have worked way better if a different way to move around those attempts to take the plot forward had been found). Nevertheless, the difference between the first installment and this one is evident, and again, the complains I could find here were minimal.

One of the strongest points, I think, is that the characters feel so real, their emotions feel so authentic and strong, that you can't help but being sucked in. Each character has a unique way to feel so incredibly relatable and compelling. I also REALLY appreciate the way each character had their own development, and how some things I wasn't so sold about in the first book were handled with much more skill here. Even if the characters had already been well-rounded and each possessive of a certain uniqueness in book one, this one gives the reader the chance to see them more in depth- sort of like if the first book had been serving as a presentation and now we could see them all properly and really get to know them. Another strong point is the dynamics between the characters, that's one of the most interesting things to read about, it's done so realistically.

Now in book one we'd been presented with Wayne, our conflicted main character, and his various struggles- while this book continues to elaborate on that of his struggles that sort of moves the main plot forward, I was hugely impressed with how carefully (but also accurately) his personal struggles were handled. Wayne's dealing with panic attacks and his anxiety and his fall into depression were by no means sugarcoated, but all the same were treated with such care that I'm once again rendered speechless by the display of skill that construction takes.

Speaking about Wayne's personal issues, I also have to give a shoutout to the way it was depicted that the situation affected his inner circle. The way Travis and Jessica and Kyle reacted to Wayne, and the way they felt about the roles they played/needed to play in that less-than-ideal scenario was heartbreakingly realistic. I really felt for these characters, the emotions were uncomfortably real.

On the opposite corner, I just need to single out how incredibly happy I am with Kyle's character development? Even though I already loved him in book one, I've had some interesting chats with my friend Jennifer about his character and things that didn't resonate all that comfortably about him- and I was pleasantly surprised to see how his character evolved in a non-problematic way! This deserves a good Hamilton quoting, and the most fitting is "my son, look at my son! Pride is not the word I'm looking for..." because, seriously? It was beautiful to witness.

And, even though it's still not the ideal situation, and it still hurts, I just must say that I'm happy about Wayne, too. I know his development will take some time still, but I'm fairly confident that it will be amazing all in all, with the evolution he showed in this book, I have hopes for him (also my heart needs it because to further the pain for much longer would be impossible to bear).

One character that deserves their own paragraph too is the wonderful, badass Ouma Van Well. Seriously, that woman is the best. I'm looking forward to see in which ways she'll be kicking ass next. She's always such a delight, a breath of fresh air when some serious shit is going down with our poor boys... I need me more Ouma!

All in all, this was a fantastic step forward from the already amazing thing that had been book 1. I can't wait to read more.
